The concept of encouraging residents and businesses to "shop local" is being implemented across the Commonwealth. This workshop will look at three approaches to "shop local". They include a community that uses their own currency for local goods and services; a community that not only encourages town residents to shop downtown but also works with the businesses to meet the needs of the residents; and finally a community encouraging residents to shift at least 10% of their annual budget to local businesses. The benefits of shopping locally are needed now more than ever given the downturn in the economy. These approaches play a crucial role in helping downtowns sustain their business community.
