White Square – Fine Books & Art is an old-style bookshop nestled in an eclectic area of authors, artists, galleries, restaurants, and colleges in the Pioneer Valley, on the western edge of Mt. Tom.
The name White Square is borrowed from La Place Blanche, one of the small plazas along the Boulevard de Clichy in Paris, where, in the early 1900's, clouds of chalky dust were churned up by carts carrying plaster of Paris and where Degas, Picasso and other artists lived and worked.
We serve as a literary resource for our community and as a destination point for sophisticated collectors. We sell books and art and host events and conversations with both local and national authors and artists. We're thrilled to bring the ambience of a literary salon to Easthampton's Cottage Street Cultural District and to live and work in this wonderful city!
We stock about 15,000 used, rare/collectible, and new books and will special order any book you need. Our purchase of fine-quality second-hand books is relentless. We actively seek classic books in fine used condition to offer our customers the best quality at a reasonable price.
We actively seek rare and collectible books including uncommon first editions and interesting association copies written by or linked to collectible authors. A few examples of books currently in stock:
- First edition of Upbuilders (1909) by Lincoln Steffens, from Steffens' personal collection
- Volume II of The History of New Hampshire by Jeremy Belknap (1784) from the personal collection of Col. Thomas Melvill, Revolutionary War hero, Tea Party participant, and grandfather to Herman Melvill(e)
- First edition of The Age of Innocence (1920), signed by Edith Wharton on a tipped-in card. From the library of Robert Grant, a close friend of Wharton's who served on the advisory panel that determined the Sacco-Vanzetti trial had been fair.
As for new books, we carry single copies of many new books so we can offer some of the newest and most intriguing works of fiction and non-fiction. These include prize winning books (Booker, Pulitzer, Newbery, Orange, etc.) and those of special interest. If we don’t have what you’re looking for, then please tell us – we may take your recommendation and start stocking it.
