At our core, we hope to be an exceptional new/used independent bookstore. By maintaining an inventory of general used books, fiction and nonfiction bestsellers, children's books, an ample local author section, and our sustainability niche books, we hope that there are appealing reading titles for anyone who may enter.

As far as sustainable business practices go...

Boswell's is currently undergoing an extensive carbon footprint analysis in order to determine how to go carbon neutral as a company within a year. If you are interested in the process, drop us a line, and we'll keep you posted on developments.

In terms of infrastructure, the light bulbs under which you flip through books at Boswell's are exclusively compact fluorescents. As we continue to cut our electricity usage, we will also be looking to be powered solely by renewable energy sources.

We have a small vermiculture bin for compost waste, and are utilizing our cardboard book shipment boxes as sheet mulch for soil building at a local farm. We hope to eventually have a closed-loop system between the farm and bookstore to further turn "waste" into food/energy.

We are also trying to go against the grain of traditional book selling by making primarily non-returnable orders, so as to cut down on the waste involved in transport. So, if you notice that we do not stock multiple copies of certain books, rest assured, it is intentional, and more copies can always be added to the next outgoing order.

Our largest accounts are with Chelsea Green Publishing, and New Society Publishers, both companies with an excellent "green" track record, printing on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, and spearheading a new industry standard. We also order extensively from Storey publishing, located just up the road in North Adams, who specialize in organic farm/gardening and homesteading titles.
