Odyssey Bookshop in South Hadley, MA, is looking for a full time bookseller and an administrator for our store's First Edition Club. The successful candidate must be an avid reader of contemporary literary fiction, have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, the ability to manage multiple projects at once, and be proficient in Microsoft Office. Additionally, we are seeking an applicant who can write in both concise and intriguing fashions, enjoys discussing their most recent reads with others, and can find tranquility in repetitive tasks.
The administrator of the First Editions Club also works in the store with customers daily. Each staff member at the Odyssey wears many hats and we share certain projects throughout the day, and additional tasks will include curating the store's used book inventory. Bookselling can be challenging sometimes, both mentally and physically. In addition to the everyday First Editions Club projects, you might find yourself organizing the back counter, shelving and pulling books, moving heavy (35-50lb) boxes, creating vibrant displays, calling customers, or preparing the store for an author event. The Odyssey relies on teamwork, and the ideal candidate enjoys playing well with others.
This is a full time position with some benefits, such as a significant staff discount, some paid time off, bundles of advanced reading copies, and the opportunity to influence the reading of over two hundred people. You also find yourself in conversation with both exciting new writers and old favorites. Over the last year the Odyssey has held events with Judy Blume, Anthony Marra, and Margaret Atwood, just to name a few. Starting salary is $10.50-12.50/hour, depending on experience. Actual schedule is TBD and may fluctuate from week to week, but expect to work at least one night per week and and at least one Saturday or Sunday each month.
Must have own transportation -- public transit to South Hadley is hit or miss.
Please submit a resume and a cover letter detailing a few of your favorite authors and books, why they inspire you, and why you think you're an excellent candidate for the job to firstname.lastname@example.org. Better yet, drop by in person with your resume and cover letter. We hope to hear from you soon!
